On January 6, 2014, Monica was traveling with her husband Thomas Henry Berry and their five-year-old daughter Maya on a highway in Puerto Cabello when their car was attacked by robbers. Monica and Thomas were both shot and killed during the robbery. Her daughter Maya survived the attack but was left orphaned.
