Dayana Mendoza is a Venezuelan beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned Miss Universe 2008. She is the first Miss Universe from Venezuela in over thirty years, and only the second South American to win the crown since Susana Duijm of Curaçao won it in 1962.
Mendoza was born on November 21, 1985, in Maturín, Monagas, Venezuela. She grew up in a family of six siblings; her parents are Ofelia and Gonzalo Mendoza. As a child, Mendoza wanted to be a veterinarian. However, she realized that she “wasn’t made for that,” and instead decided to pursue modeling.

Monica was born in Maracaibo, Venezuela on October 1, 1984. She studied communications at the Andres Bello Catholic University. Monica began her acting career in 2006 with a role on the telenovela Cosita Rica. In 2007, she starred in another telenovela called Toda Una Dama. Monica’s film credits include Blanco de Espana (2007) and Taquilla 13 (2009).
On January 6, 2014, Monica was traveling with her husband Thomas Henry Berry and their five-year-old daughter Maya on a highway in Puerto Cabello when their car was attacked by robbers. Monica and Thomas were both shot and killed during the robbery. Her daughter Maya survived the attack but was left orphaned.
