Colombia: Officials say 21 workers died in a coal mine in Colombia – Usky News



Bogota: A rescue operation at a coal mine that collapsed earlier this week in central Colombia ended on Thursday and officials said 21 workers had died in the accident.

Nicolas Garcia, the governor of Cundinamarca province, said nine workers survived the accident and had been released from hospital, while relatives of the dead miners were receiving psychological support. Officials said that all the workers present in the mine at the time of the accident have been counted.
Colombia’s Mines Minister Irene VĂ©lez said on Thursday that the explosion was caused by methane inside the mine. He said the complex would remain closed until authorities could investigate how the explosion occurred.
Mining accidents are common in Colombia, especially in coal and gold mines. Last year, 117 accidents were recorded in mines across the country. National Mining Agency, which says 146 workers were killed in those incidents. (AP)
