In a recent interview with Arbaaz Khan, Bhatt opened up about her life. While he shared his feelings about being an illegitimate child, and said he broke down when he saw that his father had applied ‘sindoor’ to his mother when she passed away, he took so long to do so. Granted, the filmmaker also talked about his relationships. He got into a relationship with Soni Razdan, while he was already married and fresh out of a break-up with Parveen Babi. The ‘meaning’ comes from his personal life. “Meaning came from my personal wounds and I found a new lease on life. It was made from my personal trauma of a failed marriage that was a fuel for creating meaning that became a path-breaking film. Magazines say That Parveen’s second breakdown was due to ‘Earth’. But I don’t agree with that. It was an autobiographical film, which was fictional.”
When Mahesh and Parveen were together, the doctor, considering Parveen’s mental health, had advised her to be given electric shocks and said that she would take at least 6-8 weeks to recover. Bhatt revealed, “A set was put up for ‘Shaan’ and she was a big part of the film. I remember walking up to the film’s director, Ramesh Sippy’s office. I was a nobody then, he just called me.” Looked up and said, ‘What’s up?’. At the time, mental illness used to be an enigma – it continues to be now. Doctors said it would take 6-8 weeks for him to return to functional normalcy. But the film’s production Didn’t have that much time, foreign film professionals were involved in the film and the meter was running. There was a lot of money riding on it. But then I hijacked it and took it to Bangalore.
Mahesh and Parveen parted ways in the 80s and he did not meet her thereafter. The director says, “When I saw ‘Silsila’, I felt like, extramarital affairs are not a tulip garden. It is a very dark place where you hide from people and feel that you are committing some sin.”
He reveals to Arbaaz that he opposed his relationship with Soni after Parveen. “We were in a hotel in Worli and I told Soni the line from ‘Raj’ that, ‘Don’t come near me, I will ruin you.’ But he said ‘I want to be ruined’.”
At that time, Bhatt also had a problem with alcohol, which he overcame. Arbaaz shared that Salman and he dropped Bhatt home once when he was quite drunk. Mahesh and Soni married in 1968 and have two daughters – Alia Bhatt and Shaheen Bhatt.
